Maps4FS — turn any real place into a Farming Simulator 25 map
This project is retired. Maps4FS is no longer maintained. There will be no further updates, no bug fixes, and no new features. It is provided as-is, with no support and no guarantees. This final release exists so the tool stays usable for anyone who still wants it — nothing more. Use it at your own risk.
What it does
Pick a spot anywhere on Earth, drag a box around it, and press one button. Maps4FS downloads the real elevation data, the real roads and rivers and field boundaries, and the real satellite imagery for that exact patch of ground, then turns all of it into a Farming Simulator 25 map you can open in Giants Editor.
Your family's farm. The valley you grew up in. That stretch of countryside you drove through once and never forgot. If it exists on a map, it can become a map.
Traditional map-making for Farming Simulator means sculpting terrain by hand, tracing roads from reference images, and placing thousands of objects one at a time in specialised software. This does that part for you, and it does it from real-world measurements rather than guesswork, so the hills are the right height and the roads go where the roads actually go.
Choosing your area
The app opens on an interactive world map. Find your location, then drag the selection box to position it, rotate it to line the map up with a road or a valley, and resize it if you want a custom area. Everything you see selected is what you get.
Map sizes run from 2 km up to 16 km square. You can also scale a larger real-world region down into a smaller, engine-friendly map size — useful when the area you care about does not fit neatly into standard dimensions.
What gets generated
- Terrain heightmap built from real elevation surveys, so the landscape has the actual shape of the place
- Background terrain — the surrounding landscape mesh that frames your playable area, textured with satellite imagery
- Texture layers — asphalt, gravel, dirt, grass, sand and more, painted from real road and land-use data
- Fields and farmlands with configurable pricing and automatic filling
- Roads and splines, including reversed splines and field entrances
- Buildings placed from real footprints, with a choice of regional architectural styles
- Trees and forests with adjustable density and natural placement scatter
- Water planes for rivers, lakes and ponds, with configurable depth and shoreline steepness
- Power lines following real infrastructure routes
- Soil maps, grass types and random ground vegetation
- overview.dds — the in-game map overview image, generated automatically
The result is a complete map template ready to open in Giants Editor for finishing touches.
Where the data comes from
Everything is built from open, publicly available data:
- Elevation — public terrain models, including the global SRTM dataset and higher-resolution regional surveys where they are available. The app detects which sources cover your chosen location and offers the best one.
- Roads, buildings, water and land use — OpenStreetMap.
- Satellite imagery — Copernicus Sentinel-2 L2A, the European Space Agency's free and open Earth observation programme. Imagery is cloud-filtered and colour-corrected automatically. You can adjust the acceptable cloud cover, how far back to search for clear scenes, and overall brightness.
Sentinel-2 imagery is 10 metres per pixel. That is excellent for terrain context, background scenery and overview images, but it is not aerial photography — do not expect to read the markings on a driveway. It gives you accurate colour and land cover for the real place, at satellite resolution.
Settings
Nearly every stage is adjustable if you want it to be, and sensible if you do not. Terrain height scaling, blur, plateau and ceiling limits, water depth, field padding, forest density, tree limits, building match tolerance, farmland pricing, spline density, and much more. Defaults produce a good map; the settings are there when you want a specific one.
The interface is available in English, German, French, Italian, Russian, Serbian, Turkish and Ukrainian.
Requirements
- Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit
- An internet connection while generating — all the source data is downloaded live
- Disk space for the output; larger maps produce substantially larger projects
- Giants Editor, to open and finish the generated map
Included in the download
A single portable application. No installer, no Python environment, no Docker, no accounts, no API keys. Unpack it and run it.
Important notes
Unsigned executable. The application is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen will likely warn you the first time you run it. This is expected for independent software without a commercial signing certificate.
Generation takes time. A map is not made in seconds. Depending on size, settings and how busy the public data services are, expect anywhere from several minutes to considerably longer. Large maps with background terrain and satellite imagery take the longest.
Retired software. To repeat the notice at the top: this project is finished and unmaintained. Nothing here will be fixed or improved. If it works for you, enjoy it. If it does not, there is no one coming to patch it.
