Another Big Update for the Editor Layout

September 1, 2026 · 2 min read

The Editor layout now lets you hide and reorder buttons and tools, save those choices with layouts, set notification timing, and choose measurement units.

Hey guys.

Not long ago I published A Big Update for the Editor Layout. I kept working on the same part of the Editor, and this is the next chapter.

This time the focus is on choosing which controls deserve space in your workspace. Apparently arranging the windows was only the beginning. The buttons wanted attention too.

The Windows menu is now Windows and buttons. It has separate lists for windows and header buttons. New Layer, Undo, Redo, and Windows and buttons stay fixed, so you can always get back to the controls. The other header buttons can be hidden, restored, and reordered by holding and dragging them.

Toolbox and View Options have the same treatment. In Edit Layout, open their button editor to see every item and its eye control. Hide what you do not use, bring it back later, and drag the tools into the order that makes sense for you.

Manage Layouts saves these choices too. Loading a layout restores button visibility and button order together.

There are two smaller controls in this update too. Notifications can remain visible for 1, 3, 5, or 10 seconds. Editor settings now has separate length and area units for Selected Object, including common metric and imperial choices. Those unit choices only change what is displayed. Your map does not quietly become three miles wide because you opened a menu.

I hope this lets you keep the tools you need close and move everything else out of the way. If one part of the layout still fights you, tell me. I have apparently chosen a career where rectangles have opinions.
