Generate a Command & Conquer Map From the Real World
Turn a real place into a Command & Conquer: Generals or Zero Hour map with terrain, roads, water, forests, buildings, starts, resources, and AI routes.
Hey guys.
I wanted to try something different and see whether the same real world data that works for farming, driving, and construction maps could also become a useful RTS battlefield.
You can now generate maps for Command & Conquer: Generals and Zero Hour from a real place in MapToPlay. They are separate export targets, so choose the game you actually plan to play. The relatives may look alike, but they are fussy in different ways.
The export keeps rectangular map dimensions instead of forcing every battlefield into a square.
It brings across the terrain with native blended ground textures, paved and gravel roads, water, forests, and stock buildings fitted to the source footprints. When no building fits safely, MapToPlay leaves that footprint empty. A quiet gap is better than three houses trying to occupy the same kitchen.
Every export also gets a testable starting layout with player starts, Supply Docks, Small Supply Piles, Oil Derricks, and simple Center, Flank, and Backdoor routes for the AI. If you want control, use Gameplay Zones in the Editor. Any family you leave empty keeps its automatic placement.
Both games have a strict height range. Autoscale is off by default, so very high terrain is clipped while detail lower down is kept. Turn Autoscale on to compress the complete relief into the game limit.
This gives you a strong starting point, not a balanced finished battlefield. Check water crossings, cliffs, starts, resources, and AI routes in World Builder, then run a real Skirmish before sharing the map. The exporter can place the pieces. It cannot negotiate fairness between friends.
Each download includes a short README explaining how to add the map to the game or open it in World Builder.
I started this because I wanted to know whether real geography could produce interesting RTS maps. So far, I think the answer is yes. A real river crossing or road network creates decisions that I probably would not have drawn by hand.
Both targets are ready for you to test now.
